Aberdeen Asset Management (Aberdeen) has been sponsoring the Aberdeen Universities’ Boat Race for several years. Aberdeen is always keen to support and develop young sporting talent and encourage more youngsters to try new sports. One of the key objectives of the PR for the annual Universities’ Boat Race held in Aberdeen is to attract more families to spectate. In 2010, Tricker PR suggested broadening out the PR campaign to include more direct contact with children and their families and drew up a plan to engage with local schools and encourage younger pupils to take up rowing in future. It also aimed to increase the number of family spectators at the race.
The Tricker PR strategy included facilitated school assemblies led by the rowing crews, workshops with selected pupils, demonstrations of rowing in malls and sustaining levels of media coverage from previous years. Social media was also utilised including Facebook and Twitter to ensure that more of the student population would follow the race. A competition to design a rowing ‘all-in-one’ outfit was launched to schools with the aim of securing 100 entrants – the prize was a sports centre voucher.
