Scottish Traditional Boat Festival

Each year the population of the Banffshire Coast town of Portsoy more than doubles for a weekend for the Scottish Traditional Boat Festival – an international celebration of the area’s rich maritime traditions.

Stunts for the launch of the event have been very successful at raising the profile of the event and have gained national and international media coverage including television and radio. The second day of the 2008 event was washed out by a gale, so in 2009 Tricker PR banned whistling in town of Portsoy for a month as it’s an old maritime tradition that you shouldn’t whistle onboard ship as it angers the devil. The stunt caught global media attention and the festival chairman was in demand for radio and TV interviews ... including judging a phone in whistling ‘name that tune’ competition on Australian radio.

In 2009, with maritime knitting as a key festival theme, the launch involved four foot long knitting needles and a giant ball of wool – another front page for the festival - and in 2010 the Tricker team (over a glass or two of wine) made hundreds of paper boats for the biggest paper boat flotilla. A diminutive Admiral of the Fleet set them off from port and secured another front page.

But it’s not all stunts for the festival. In 2010 Tricker PR delivered a new website and its social media campaign as well as maintaining the high levels of media coverage in weekend supplements and what’s on columns. Tricker PR’s work has won six PR industry awards for the festival.
